A Food Garden Transforming the Lives of Youth in Lavender Hill
In the heart of Lavender Hill—a community often overshadowed by crime and hardship—something beautiful is growing. Rise Above Development, an organisation dedicated to uplifting local youth, is using the power of gardening to cultivate strength, self-sufficiency, and hope.
At the core of Rise Above’s impactful work is its gardening programme. This initiative teaches children valuable agricultural skills while offering nourishment and a sense of purpose. The young participants learn to grow their own vegetables, gaining hands-on experience in sustainable farming. The fresh produce is then used to prepare nutritious meals, ensuring that the children not only eat healthily but also develop a deeper understanding of sustainability. Beyond the practical skills, the garden serves as a therapeutic escape from the challenges many of these young people face. As they nurture the soil and witness the fruits of their labour, they gain pride and a renewed sense of responsibility, realising they can shape their own futures.
Casidra, a committed partner in community development, has been instrumental in providing the resources needed for the garden to thrive. With Casidra’s support, Rise Above Development has received an advanced irrigation system, a secure fence to protect the garden, and essential materials like fertiliser, compost, seeds, and tools. This partnership has allowed the garden to grow, increasing its capacity to feed and educate more children. Casidra’s investment highlights its dedication to empowering communities through sustainable agricultural solutions.
Leading this life-changing initiative is Malany Meyer, whose passion and leadership have been pivotal in the organisation’s growth. Thanks to her efforts, Rise Above Development has secured a ten-year lease on its land from the City of Cape Town, with the backing of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. Despite working out of modest office containers, the organisation has ambitious plans to expand and deepen its impact. Through a partnership with SPADES, the garden also receives sponsored vegetables, supplementing its harvest and ensuring food security. Yet, as the project grows, more support is needed to sustain and expand its reach.
For the children of Lavender Hill, Rise Above Development is more than just an after-school program—it’s a path to a brighter future. Every seed they plant is a step toward self-reliance, and every harvest is a reminder of their limitless potential. These children, many of whom come from challenging backgrounds, are learning that their past doesn’t have to define their future. As Malany Meyer says, “Never forget your roots; there will always be a next person in need.”
