Carmen Stevens Winery

A Legacy in Every Sip

Rooted in the fertile soils of Stellenbosch, where rolling vineyards meet historic cellars, stands a winery that tells a story far deeper than the wine it produces. Carmen Stevens Wines is not just a winemaking venture—it’s a powerful testament to the grit, grace, and groundbreaking vision of Carmen Stevens, South Africa’s first Black female winemaker.

Stevens’ journey into the wine world began with an unlikely spark—her mother’s romance novels, often set among vineyards and wine cellars. From those pages, a dream was born. But the road ahead was anything but romantic. Carmen faced rejection after rejection, each one rooted in the harsh realities of racial and systemic inequality.

Yet she persisted, and in 1995, Stevens broke through, becoming the first Black South African to study winemaking.

Fast forward to 2019, and Stevens had etched her name into history once more—registering South Africa’s first 100% Black-owned winery in the heart of Stellenbosch. Her triumph is more than personal; it’s a beacon for underrepresented voices in the wine industry and a celebration of what’s possible when passion meets perseverance.

Since its first vintage in 2014, Carmen Stevens Wines has earned acclaim for producing bold, authentic wines with a sense of place and purpose. At the 2024 Tim Atkin Awards, several of Stevens’ wines received high praise:

  • Carménère Stellenbosch – 92 Points
  • Carménère Wellington – 91 Points
  • Nemrac – 90 Points
  • Chenin Blanc – 90 Points

Each bottle reflects Carmen’s belief in honouring the nuances of every vintage, crafted with care, creativity, and plant-derived additives—making them accessible to a broader community of wine lovers.

Even the label tells a story. Featuring a tiger entwined with hidden figures—a man, a bird, and a dog—it mirrors the complexity of wine itself. The artwork was painted by Stevens’ daughter Caitlin at just six years old, adding a heartfelt layer to each bottle and a reminder that this is, above all, a family-driven legacy.

Sustainability is central to Carmen Stevens Wines. As an Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) certified winery, the business is committed to responsible farming, resource conservation, and ethical practices—ensuring every glass poured is good for both people and the planet.

Stevens’ impact extends beyond the vineyard. In 2011, she founded the Carmen Stevens Foundation, tackling food insecurity head-on. What began as a soup program for 400–500 learners has grown into a vital support network, now feeding over 25,000 children across 125 schools in 50 Western Cape communities.

This life-changing work is powered by generous donors—including the passionate Angels of Naked Wines—and has created jobs for local women who prepare the meals, combining nourishment with empowerment.

Stevens’ journey is further elevated by herself with Casidra, an organisation that shares her commitment to agricultural development and community upliftment. With Casidra’s support in project implementation and sustainable practices, Carmen Stevens Wines continues to grow—not just as a business, but as a force for social change.

Carmen Stevens is a pioneer, a winemaker, a philanthropist, and a mother. Her story is one of audacity and authenticity, of breaking through ceilings and planting seeds of change. As she continues to shape the wine industry and uplift communities, Stevens’ legacy lives on—in every vineyard row, every initiative, and every bottle.

Because her wines, like her journey, are layered, bold, and unforgettable—an invitation to taste not just the flavour, but the story within.
