From Construction to Farming

The Journey of Soutkloof Boerdery

Nestled in the rugged and breathtaking landscapes of Clanwilliam, Petrus and Danny Gerste faced an unexpected turning point. After years in the construction industry, they inherited their father’s farm—a moment that would shape their future in ways they never imagined. Rather than selling the land, the brothers decided to take a leap into agriculture, motivated by a vision of sustainability and a deep desire to honour their father’s legacy.

Owning over a thousand hectares of land, the Gerste brothers set their sights on building Soutkloof Boerdery, a thriving small-scale livestock farm. The journey, however, wasn’t without its hurdles. Water shortages and unreliable electricity presented early challenges, but Petrus and Danny weren’t ready to give up. They turned to the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) for assistance, receiving invaluable support from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA).

Their application was approved, and with the help of Mulalo Nemutudi, a dedicated project manager from Casidra, their transition into farming was seamless. Casidra delivered vital resources on time, including solar-powered water pumps, which solved both their water and electricity problems, setting the stage for a successful new venture.

With unwavering determination, the brothers expanded their livestock, introducing ewes, lambs, and rams to the farm. They also planted lucerne, a high-quality forage crop to sustain their animals and ensure a steady supply of feed for optimal meat production. The commitment to sustainability was evident in every step they took, from improving their farm’s infrastructure to implementing efficient farming practices.

CASP’s support didn’t stop at infrastructure; they also provided the brothers with essential feed and medication for their livestock. By the end of the year, their hard work paid off when they secured orders for their first production cycle, set for early December 2024. This success is a testament to the brothers’ dedication and the power of collaboration with supportive partners.

For Petrus and Danny, Soutkloof Boerdery is more than just a business—it’s a heartfelt tribute to their father’s legacy and a promise to future generations. Their perseverance has turned a dream into a flourishing reality, paving the way for other aspiring farmers to follow in their footsteps. Their advice to others entering the industry is simple yet profound:

“Educate yourself, ask questions, and seek knowledge from everyone in the industry—it will lead you to success.”

Thanks to their hard work and vision, Soutkloof Boerdery has blossomed into a thriving farm, proving that with the right mindset, support, and determination, anything is possible. And this is only the beginning of their story—the future holds endless possibilities for the Gerste brothers and their growing farm.
