Growing a Legacy with SAMSAR

Turning Tunnels into Triumphs

In the heart of Wellington, Western Cape, a new kind of farming story is unfolding—one rooted in heritage, driven by passion, and shaped by innovation. Meet Dan Fransman, a modern-day agricultural trailblazer whose journey proves that with the right mindset, support, and determination, anything is possible.

Dan Fransman’s love for farming was planted early. As a child, he watched his father work as a farm labourer—an experience that left a lasting impression. Those early days sparked a dream: not just to farm, but to build a legacy. Today, on his seven-hectare farm, Fransman is turning that dream into reality, combining resilience and modern agricultural methods to grow SAMSAR into a thriving enterprise.

Fransman cultivates two hectares of wine grapes and one hectare of lemons, with another leased hectare dedicated to tunnel-grown vegetables. His produce—ranging from tomatoes and green beans to cucumbers and green peppers—is sold to local outlets like Spar Wellington and the Cape Town Fresh Produce Market, feeding both families and the local economy.

But what truly sets Fransman apart is his commitment to continuous learning. He keeps a close eye on climate trends, environmental shifts, and market demands. With guidance from experienced agri-professionals, he adapts and refines his farming practices, proving that knowledge is just as vital as soil and seed.

A key turning point in his journey came with support from the Food Security CASP funding programme through the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. With their help, Fransman received his first 10m x 16m production tunnel, enabling him to supply tomatoes, cabbages, and green beans to Spar Wellington. Encouraged by the results, he later secured a 30m x 10m tunnel, boosting production and resilience.

Now, Fransman is aiming higher—with plans to add another tunnel of the same size, scaling operations to meet growing demand and deepen his farm’s impact.

For Fransman, farming is more than a business—it’s a calling.

“This is about more than profit. It’s about passion, purpose, and providing for my family and community,” he says.

He takes immense pride in contributing to food security while doing what he loves—a sentiment that fuels his unwavering motivation.

Fransman credits much of his progress to his partnership with Casidra, and especially project manager Reesher Kearns, whose hands-on support helped bring his plans to life. The Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Extension and Advisory Services, alongside the Cape Winelands District Economist, also played a vital role—helping Fransman sharpen his business and financial management skills to grow SAMSAR sustainably.

Like many entrepreneurs, Fransman has faced setbacks. Managing plant diseases in tomato crops was a major challenge, but through experimentation and perseverance, he found the right solutions. Access to capital for expansion remains difficult—but Fransman continues to move forward with strategic focus and relentless drive.

His message to young people is both hopeful and practical:

“Agriculture isn’t just hard labour—it’s full of opportunity. With knowledge, passion, and innovation, you can build something incredible.”

SAMSAR is more than rows of crops and greenhouses—it’s a living symbol of ambition, resilience, and empowerment. It’s a story that inspires a new generation of South African farmers to dream big, dig deep, and grow boldly.
