Oasis Garden of Grace

Growing More Than Just Food

In the heart of Skaapkraal, Philippi, a powerful transformation is quietly taking root. At the Oasis Garden of Grace, visionary leader and beneficiary Clifford Martines is not just growing fruits and vegetables—he’s cultivating hope, dignity, and opportunity.

Thanks to funding from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA) and support from Casidra, Martines successfully improved the garden’s infrastructure with a fully installed borehole and upgraded irrigation system. These advancements are the foundation for something far greater than a food garden—they are the building blocks of a thriving, self-sustaining community.

Under Martines’s leadership, Oasis is home to 100 individuals who were once living on the streets. The garden now supports not only their nutritional needs, but also their personal growth, offering housing, education programs, and vocational opportunities.

But Martines’s dream stretches beyond the boundaries of Oasis. His initiative, Gardens for Growth, empowers local families by helping them start and maintain household food gardens. So far, eight households are part of the program—with a long-term goal of transforming these gardens into community-run small businesses, delivering fresh, healthy produce and creating jobs in the area.

“This isn’t just a garden—it’s a movement,” says Martines. “When we all contribute our small part with integrity, we begin to see the incredible impact we can have. Together, we make a big difference.”

Looking ahead, Martines aims to conduct a study on the environmental impact of the Oasis Garden. He hopes to measure how sustainable urban farming contributes to the health of the planet—showcasing how local action can support global environmental goals.

Through this lens, Oasis becomes more than a garden—it becomes a model for community-led climate resilience and ecological restoration.

The produce from the garden not only feeds the residents but also serves the broader community through local sales—fostering food security and economic empowerment. Every tomato, every herb, every harvest tells a story of resilience and renewal.

At Oasis Garden of Grace, Clifford is planting far more than crops. He’s planting seeds of transformation, empowerment, and shared responsibility. His work is a powerful reminder that when communities unite with vision and purpose, anything is possible.
