Seeds for Life

Cultivating Change Through Urban Organic Farming

In the heart of Kuilsriver, Cape Town, where resilience meets innovation, Seeds for Life Urban Organic Farming has blossomed into a powerful symbol of transformation. What began as a response to the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic has flourished into a certified organic farm making a remarkable impact—on just 300 square meters.

Founded by Tanya Van Stade and Yumnah Wickstrom, Seeds for Life is more than a farm—it’s a movement. Their journey into commercial farming wasn’t without its challenges, but through relentless research, market awareness, and creative experimentation, they carved out a unique space in the agricultural landscape. Their ability to adapt and innovate has proven that small-scale farmers can thrive in an industry often dominated by large operations.

From humble beginnings, Seeds for Life has grown into a dedicated team of five, each member playing a vital role in its success. A major turning point came with the support of Casidra, which provided technical equipment and a much-needed vehicle—dramatically improving the farm’s productivity and efficiency. The Western Cape Department of Agriculture also played a key role by offering market access and research support, connecting the farm with valuable networks to help expand its reach.

Innovation is at the heart of Seeds for Life. The team is proud to be the only commercial growers of galangal—a fragrant Asian root—currently undergoing trials and research in the Western Cape. They also cultivate Carolina Reaper chilies from heirloom seeds, emphasising authenticity and quality. Their product range doesn’t stop at fresh produce; they’ve added value through nutrient-rich, dehydrated beetroot and spinach powders—offering consumers a convenient, healthy option that speaks to modern lifestyles.

Tanya and Yumnah are not only building a business—they’re planting seeds of change for the broader community, with a special focus on uplifting women in agriculture. They believe that empowering female farmers will lead to stronger networks, increased opportunities, and meaningful transformation in the industry.

Their advice to young women aspiring to enter the agricultural sector is simple yet powerful:

“Just start. Use whatever commodity you have and take that first step.”

Seeds for Life is about more than growing food—it’s about creating opportunity, breaking down barriers, and cultivating a future where every farmer has access to support, knowledge, and a community that believes in their potential. Through mentorship and technical guidance, they’re ensuring sustainable agriculture is both accessible and thriving.

The journey of Seeds for Life is a testament to what can be achieved with passion, perseverance, and purpose. In a world increasingly defined by industrial-scale farming, this small but mighty operation is proving that urban organic farming can feed communities, inspire change, and help shape the future of agriculture.
